No one likes traffic jams. They cause us a delay, and they might make us late for work, school or any other event we need to be on time for. However, it's good to remain calm while being stuck in this kind of traffic. Here are some ways to stay calm and composed during a traffic jam.

Steps

Traffic Jam

Traffic jams - the bane of your existence, and a perfect waste of time.

1 Understand that you will eventually get out of the traffic. Traffic jams may last for over an hour or even 2 hours, but if you think you'll be there for more than a day or even forever, you'll be stressed out and worried.

Listen to music.

2 Listen to music. It can be a playlist on your iPad or iPod, a music CD, the radio, or anything you want to listen to. Listening to music can help you pass the time during a traffic jam.

Use the Internet if you have a WiFi connection.

3 Use the Internet if you have a WiFi connection. You can check your email, the weather, or even find information about the traffic jam you are stuck in, and get traffic updates on your smartphone.

Try relaxation techniques.

4 Try relaxation techniques. Breathe, meditate or do something else that helps you to relax. Relaxation techniques calm your body and mind and make time pass more quickly.

Call people.

5 Call people. You can call your friends, relatives, or anyone else you want to talk to. A phone conversation might take your mind off the traffic. You could even try texting.

Read a book

6 Read a book, magazine, newspaper or whatever you want to read. Reading is good for you, and it can steer your attention away from the traffic and towards the book. It might even be something you like to read!

Tips

          • Bring something to eat and/or drink. You might be hungry or thirsty during the traffic jam.

          • Try playing car games, such as the Alphabet Game (where you try to find words outside the car that begin with all 26 letters in the alphabet) and the license plate game (where you observe license plates and try to find cars from all 49 continental states). Car games are entertaining and help to pass the time during periods of bad traffic, such as traffic jams.

          • If you can, find the next exit and take a new way. Be sure, however, that if you get off at an exit, the new way will take you to where you need to get to.

Warnings

          • Do not do anything that might distract you so much, such as getting a little bit too into your book, or email, that traffic could start flowing without you noticing.

          • In some places, texting while behind the wheel is illegal, even in still traffic.

          • Even if you're really tired, never sleep in the car. This is very dangerous and you may not even see it when the traffic jam is over!

          • Do not park or get out of your car during a traffic jam. That is not a safe idea, and cars aren't allowed to be parked in the middle of a street.
